Frequently asked questions

Below are some common questions that we receive.

How often and how long do I attend school as a Volunteer?

You are asked to commit to the volunteering role for at least a year. You will go into school every week during school term time. You will go to school on the same day each week for one morning or one afternoon session (this you choose). The sessions normally run from 9 – 12pm or 1pm – 3pm/3.30pm.

.

Can I go to a school near me?

You will be placed in a school as near to where you travel from as we can. We will place you in a school where we have a vacancy. We are not in every school so placing you in your local school or one you request may not be possible.

.

Will I be reimbursed travel expenses?

We pay Volunteer travel expenses on request. We pay a maximum of 10 miles travel per session. Travel expenses are to be submitted every term.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                              ..

What age group will I work with?

Volunteers will work with primary school children aged between 5 – 11 years. You will not work with a mixture of ages but you will work with one year group in school which school will decide. If you prefer to work with younger or older primary school children you can make this known on application.

Do I meet other Literacy Volunteers?

You can meet other Volunteers for a catch up, questions and to share advice at our Volunteer Network Meetings. These are run by a Volunteer/Schools Co-ordinator every term. There are at least three VNMs on different dates and venues to choose to attend every term.                                                             .

Do I have to attend both Literacy Volunteer Training sessions?

Yes you have to attend Session 1 and Session 2 as part of your training process. If you cannot attend one of the sessions on the dates supplied there will be an opportunity to attend the missed session on another training block. This can be arranged with the Volunteer/Schools Co-ordinator.                       ..
