Become a Literacy Volunteer

Give a child the gift of reading confidence

At Literacy Volunteers, we believe every child deserves the chance to discover the joy of reading. Since 1996, our volunteers have been sitting side-by-side with children across Nottinghamshire and some of Derbyshire, helping them to grow in confidence, imagination, and self-belief.

Each week, volunteers create a space where children feel listened to, supported, and inspired. The sessions are not about tests or grades — they’re about sharing stories, laughing together, and opening the door to a brighter future.

Why volunteer with us?

You’ll work one-to-one with children who need encouragement the most.

We already work in 90 schools and are striving to reach all 362 primary schools across our region.

Volunteers are vetted, receive full training, resources, and ongoing guidance so you always feel prepared.

Give a child the gift of reading confidence

90 schools supported so far

We partner with over 90 schools across Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire, matching volunteers with children who benefit most from one-to-one reading time.

362 schools is our vision

Our goal is to bring the joy of reading to every child who needs it.
By growing our network to reach 362 schools, we can help thousands more children gain confidence and discover the pleasure of books.

Hundreds of children supported each year

Every week, our volunteers spend time helping children read, talk, and play educational games.
Those simple, friendly sessions make a lasting difference to literacy skills, wellbeing, and self-belief.

Make a Lasting Difference

By giving a few hours every week during school term time, you can boost a child’s confidence, open doors to future opportunities, and share the magic of reading for life.

Training that prepares and supports you

Before you start in school, we’ll make sure you feel fully confident and supported.
Our two-part training covers everything from fun literacy activities to safeguarding and communication tips.
You’ll also receive guidance on games, reading techniques, and the best ways to engage children during your sessions.

Why volunteering is so rewarding

Volunteering with Literacy Volunteers is incredibly rewarding.
You’ll see children grow in confidence, discover a love of books, and look forward to your visits each week.
Many of our volunteers say the experience brings them purpose, happiness, and a sense of community.
