Literacy Volunteers awarded national grant from 1001 Critical Days Foundation to reach more babies and families

We are delighted to announce that Literacy Volunteers has been awarded multi-year funding from the 1001 Critical Days Foundation, as part of its first £1 million in grants to charities supporting babies and families across the UK.

This grant will allow us to expand our “Learning to Love Books” programme in two family hubs in Nottinghamshire, communities where around 75% of families speak English as an additional language. Over the next five years, this support will enable us to reach around 300 babies and their families, giving them the opportunity to build confidence, develop early language skills and enjoy books together.

Mike Collis, Chair of Trustees at Literacy Volunteers, said: “We are thrilled to receive this grant, which will help us reach hundreds of babies and families in Nottingham’s most disadvantaged communities, nurturing early language, confidence and strong parent-child bonds.”

The 1001 Critical Days Foundation is the UK’s only grant-giving charity dedicated to supporting babies. Its Patron, Lord David Blunkett, emphasised the power of community-based charities, saying: “We’re not talking about professionals coming in and offering support – important as this is. But rather, mobilising the talent and strength of the community, no matter how deprived, to become part of the solution, not the problem.”

We are proud to be one of six charities chosen from 114 applications nationwide. Together, we share a commitment to ensuring every baby has the best start in life.
